Destination Imagination

March 14, 2016

I had the privildge of attending my nephews presentation in the Destination Imagination event this weekend. Destination Imagination (DI) is a non-profit, volunteer-led, cause-driven organization. Their purpose is to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. http://www.destinationimagination.org

The simple overview is that the kids are empowered to write, create, build and present their own ideas and props. No parents. My sister is a leader and she tells me they do absolutely everything on their own. Her role is to organize meetings and coordinate the parents. After-all these kids are in the fifth grade.

There is nothing like seeing true, fresh imagination at work. Yes, some of it is difficult to follow and the stories do not always make sense, but with only eight minutes to present it amazed me the ride they took us on.

We in the "creative" industry can take a play out of their play book and that is to really "play".

Have some fun. Go where others have not gone before. Enjoy the ride. Too often we are looking for that safe idea that really isn't creative at all - but a second or third wave idea that we know our client will be able to handle.

Power to the furtlile minds of our children. Power to Destination Imagination.
